What Is the Porsche IMS Bearing?
Many horizontally opposed Porsche engines — including those in Boxster, Cayman and 911 (996/997) models — use an intermediate shaft that transfers drive from the crankshaft to the camshafts via timing chains.
Up to the M96 engine, Porsche used a pressure-fed plain bearing lubricated by engine oil.
However, with the introduction of the Boxster in 1997, a sealed ball bearing was used on the flywheel side of the engine, with a plain bearing on the opposite end.
While innovative for its time, the sealed bearing design can degrade over mileage or age, leading to bearing failure and, in extreme cases, catastrophic engine damage.
That’s why regular inspection and, where necessary, replacement is essential for long-term reliability.
