Gardner Douglas has long been regarded as one of the UK's premier Cobra manufacturers, renowned for producing beautifully engineered cars that combine authentic styling with outstanding build quality and exceptional driving dynamics. The GD427 is widely considered one of the finest Cobra recreations ever produced, offering the perfect balance of classic 1960s styling with modern engineering, reliability and exhilarating performance.
At its heart sits a formidable 5.7-litre (350ci) Chevrolet V8, paired with the highly desirable Tremec 5-speed manual gearbox, delivering effortless performance, immense torque and the unmistakable soundtrack that only a large-capacity American V8 can provide.
In 2020, the engine benefited from a carefully selected programme of performance upgrades, further enhancing both power delivery and drivability. The work included the installation of an Edelbrock RPM Performance Package, incorporating a new 7102 performance camshaft, roller timing chain set, Torker II inlet manifold, Edelbrock 1405 600 CFM carburettor, and a high-performance aluminium water pump. Following completion of the upgrades, the car was professionally set up and tested on a rolling road, where it produced an impressive 385.2 BHP. The result is a wonderfully responsive V8 with effortless torque and exhilarating performance whilst retaining excellent road manners.
The engine bay is every bit as impressive as the exterior, beautifully detailed with Edelbrock rocker covers, chrome alternator, chrome crank and water pump pulleys, polished air cleaner, silicone hoses and a host of carefully finished components, reflecting the quality of the build and the attention to detail throughout.
Finished in the timeless combination of Dark Blue with Old English White Le Mans stripes, the exterior perfectly captures the spirit of the original Cobra. Chrome front and rear bumpers, full Cobra badging, chrome mirrors, stainless steel wipers, twin chrome three-leg rollover hoops and classic 16-inch Halibrand alloy wheels complete the unmistakable appearance.
Inside, the cockpit remains true to the traditional Cobra theme, featuring Smiths instruments, a Momo steering wheel, Cobra gear lever, Willans harnesses, heater and a discreet Retro DAB radio with USB and AUX connectivity, successfully blending period character with modern convenience.
Mechanically, this GD427 has clearly been maintained to a very high standard throughout its life. In 2017, both the engine and gearbox were removed to replace various seals, while an immobiliser was installed in 2016 for added security and insurance purposes.
Accompanying the vehicle is an extensive history and build file, including build documentation, invoices, previous MOT certificates, dyno sheets, spare keys and a wealth of paperwork documenting the car's build, maintenance and performance upgrades.

The new location is impressive, and I was able to work on my laptop in the (very grand) waiting room whilst my car was being fixed (new window regulator).
